Joy is a Conservative, Self-employed Freelance Journalist, Columnist & Activist. Her feature and essay work has been published in many national and regional magazines, including, Redbook, Woman’s Day, Newsweek, The Constitutionalist Today and many more. She was awarded the Colorado Author’s League’s Best Feature award in 2009, 2010 and 2012 and has three books that have been published. History Highlight
Mercy Otis Warren
Mercy Otis Warren was a published poet, political playwright and satirist during the age of the American Revolution, a time when women were encouraged and expected to keep silent on political matters. Warren not only engaged with the leading figures of the day, such as John, Abigail, and Samuel Adams, but she became an outspoken commentator and historian, as well as the leading female intellectual of the Revolution and early republic.
In 1754, she wed the politically active James Warren, a classmate of her brother’s at Harvard, who encouraged her to pursue writing. After James Warren’s election to the Massachusetts Legislature in 1766, the Warrens began hosting leading citizens in their Plymouth home.An avid patriot, Warren began writing political dramas that denounced British policies and key officials in Massachusetts, notably Governor Thomas Hutchinson. Her 1772 satire, “The Adulator” (published anonymously in the Massachusetts Spy), criticized the British colonial governor’s policies a full four years before Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. Warren also published two additional plays skewering British colonial leaders, Defeat (1773) and The Group (1775.) She supported the Boston Tea Party and boycotts of British imports and urged other women to follow suit.
Warren was one of the most convincing Patriots in the Revolution and her works inspired others to become Patriots. Her work earned the congratulations of numerous prominent men of the age, including George Washington and Alexander Hamilton.
In 1805, she completed her literary career with a three-volume History of the Rise, Progress, and Termination of the American Revolution. President Thomas Jefferson ordered subscriptions for himself and his cabinet and noted his “anticipation of her truthful account of the last thirty years that will furnish a more instructive lesson to mankind than any equal period known in history.”
Warren proved her ability to resonate to her colonial audience, men and women alike. Furthermore, she proved courageous in being willing to put forth work calling out the authoritative power while raising a family, yet she was humble and practical in how she presented the commentary through quieter presentations.
